What is Crossfit?

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life. They move the largest loads the longest distances, so they are ideal for maximizing the amount of work done in the shortest time. Intensity is essential for results and is measurable as work divided by time—or power. The more work you do in less time, or the higher the power output, the more intense the effort. By employing a constantly varied approach to training, functional movements and intensity lead to dramatic gains in fitness.

Testimonials

“I started at CrossFit ATC about a year and a half ago. I was at a time in my life were I was looking for a change, challenge, and something to belong to. I spent most of my time in the bars and living a pretty unhealthy lifestyle. It didn’t take me long to make a life change and my nights at the bars turned into my early mornings and nights with a bar in my hands.. My coaches were patient and encouraging, always pushing me to go to limits I never thought I could, which in turn made me want to go to more classes and reach new PR’s. My CrossFit friends started becoming my CrossFit family. Those coaches, those people are everything to me nowadays. I’ll never be more thankful for what this Crossfit community has done for me. In a big way they saved my life.”

“Another shout out to CrossFit and YOU! I just got home from my oncology appointment. In May, he started me on a medication called Megace. It fights sarcoma but has a horrible side effect of weight gain. At my last appointment he said, “When I see you again, there will be more of you to love.” Most people gain between 40-50 pounds in the first year. Guess what? I’ve LOST six pounds since I started the medication. My blood pressure was 80/55 and my heart rate was 51 beats per minute. I ABSOLUTELY accredit this to the intensity and motivation of our program!! 😀 BAM!!”

“I have been a member of Crossfit ATC for almost 3 years. Derek is friendly, knowledgeable and somehow knows when you
need to be pushed when you just want to give up. The members are a great group of motivated people who encourage each other.
Crossfit ATC always feels welcoming and comfortable. Crossfit relieves stress, doesn’t take a lot of time and has made me the
strongest (physically and mentally) that I have ever been. I am not able to do pull ups yet but I am positive that I will soon be
able to with the help of Derek. The workouts are challenging and I think everyone should give it a try!!”
-Nicole Gatturna

“I saw myself in the mirror and realized that for all my faults, I’m a pretty fit dude compared to not all that long ago. And not all that long ago, I’d definitely opt for the party instead of the training … and its not like I don’t like the party, I always will. But being as good as possible for the training enters the mind more and more these days, and it NEVER used to be there. I hear your gosh darned coach voice in my head occasionally and I think about little ways to improve, not only myself but the entire experience. I mean, I want to beat my wife, the Fox, Dana and everyone else in that room more than anything … but if I can’t, then I want them to have a great day and kick butt That’s good sTUFF.
Dude, there are a lot of people you have positively influenced over the past few months. I am hard pressed to think of anyone who is worse off for stepping into your room, and there are literally dozens who are hell-and-gone more fit, happier, closer, more studly; who have made new friends, & just overall become better people just for coming. What I am getting at is that you and your program have been a giant part of this for me and for all of us. My daughters liken it to a cult and Jen and I get a kick out of them saying it. I always tell the kids, “listen, if a guy is going to be addicted to something, at least its positive.”
Anyway, I’m babbling, but keep up the good work..”
-Travis Brunson

“Crossfit has changed my life. The obvious can be stated, Crossfit WILL make you look better. I lost 15 pounds and have maintained a weight that I was in high school without the dreaded word “dieting”. Though I look better that’s not the gift that Crossfit has given me. Crossfit ended the pressures to be “thin” and to lose weight and to be a size 0 that I was plagued with most of my adult life. I was obsessed with the scale and with Crossfit I no longer need one. My focus shifted from the weight on the scale to the weight on the
bar; how much I can deadlift, clean and push-press. My progress was not measured by the pounds I was losing but the ability to do pull-ups with a band, to kipping pull-ups and then being able to do dead hang pull-ups. Crossfit has made me believe in myself. WOD’s that looked impossible I would accomplish one rep at a time. I never thought I would be able to ever RX a WOD and now I can do most WOD’s as RX’d. Crossfit has given me confidence to believe in myself, that if I work hard I can accomplish anything I put my mind and body too. I’ve learned the word “can’t” should never be spoken at Crossfit, can’t is limiting and I’ve proven to myself that I can, maybe
not today or tomorrow but eventually I will be able to succeed at the next Crossfit goal. Bring on the muscle-ups!”

I was hesitant to start cross fit after all the negative publicity regarding injuries. After deciding to start, I have become a regular participant at cross fit, even following the WOD’s when I’m out of town. Derek has made sure that our fundamentals are sound, thereby maximizing performance, and minimizing risk of injury. The camaraderie in our box is the most rewarding aspect of it. Frequently, after an exhaustive work out, there is someone left behind pushing those taking a little longer to complete the routine. The physical and mental gains are undeniable. I strongly believe that the combination of weight training, endurance, mobility and mental toughness that comes from physical strain, makes us more effective in every day life. I would not hesitate to recommend cross fit to anyone interested in improving their exercise capacity and physical well being.
-Frank Rodriguez

I am now 10 months into CrossFit and it has been a revelation! I have been into athletics all my life, particularly swimming; but your program is something out of the ordinary. XFit is like an integrator, movement, strength, balance, endurance, putting it all together and having fun too!! I really like the WOD’s, so helpful when I am out west. So I am coming back into town this weekend and look forward to continuing the fun!
